What’s Involved in Upgrading to a 200 Amp Service in BC?
Thinking about upgrading to a 200 amp service? You’re not alone. Between EV chargers, hot tubs, basement suites, and enough kitchen gadgets to open a small restaurant, homes just aren’t what they used to be electrically.
If your panel is starting to feel like it’s hanging on for dear life… it might be time for an upgrade.
So, what does a 200 amp upgrade actually involve?
Short answer: more than just swapping a panel.
Inside your home:
The panel itself gets swapped out. That means disconnecting every single circuit at the panel—and yes, that’s a lot of wires.
Then we:
Remove the old panel
Install the new 200 amp panel
Reconnect every circuit cleanly and properly
To give you an idea: one electrician can be at that panel for 6–7 hours straight, just making sure everything is landed right and labeled properly.
While that’s happening, someone else is usually handling the outside work.
Outside your home:
Part 1: Power to the meter base (from the grid)
Sometimes your existing service is already capable of handling 200 amps. Other times, we need BC Hydro to upgrade the feed coming into your meter base.
Part 2: From the meter to your panel
This is the part inside your property—and it usually needs upgrading.
Your meter might be:
Close to the road
On the side of your house
Or what feels like halfway across the property
The distance between your meter and panel plays a big role in cost, because… well, copper isn’t getting any cheaper.
4. Permits & Coordinating with BC Hydro

How long does it take?
Most upgrades can be done in a day, and there will be a planned power outage while the work is completed.
Pro tip: it’s a great day to make plans for the family.
Do you actually need 200 amps?
Not always—but here are some signs you probably do:
Your breakers trip regularly and you’ve already had the panel checked to make sure everything is in good working condition
You’re adding a suite, EV charger, or hot tub
Your panel is full
(Tip: it might look full without actually being full—this is where having an electrician or inspector take a look really matters)Your home has an older panel with 100 amps (or less) feeding it
All the electrical devices in your home appear “old timey”.
The Bottom Line
A 200 amp upgrade isn’t just about “more power”—it’s about reliability, SAFETY, and future-proofing your home.
